Are chlamydiae swine pathogens?

چکیده
In recent years, there has been a renewed effort to study swine chlamydiae, both because there is an increased awareness of chlamydial diseases and because we now have improved methods of isolation. Six different strains of chlamydiae have been isolated from cases of enteritis, pneumonia, and conjunctivitis in nursing, nursery, and finishing pigs. These isolates are all of the C. trachomatis type and are similar to the human C. trachomatis strains. However, molecular characterization has determined that they are distinctly different from the human strains. This report discusses only the enteritis, pneumonia, and conjunctivitis caused by these strains, although chlamydiae have been associated with arthritis and reproductive diseases in swine, as well.

Effects of a probiotic strain of Enterococcus faecium on the rate of natural chlamydia infection in swine.
Chlamydiae are obligately intracellular pathogens which cause infections associated with a broad range of diseases in both livestock and humans. In addition, a large proportion of animals may become persistently infected asymptomatic carriers and serve as reservoirs for other animals which also shed these potential zoonotic pathogens. Reducing the chlamydial load of animals is therefore of majo...
متن کاملPathogenic potential of novel Chlamydiae and diagnostic approaches to infections due to these obligate intracellular bacteria.
Novel chlamydiae are newly recognized members of the phylum Chlamydiales that are only distantly related to the classic Chlamydiaceae, i.e., Chlamydia and Chlamydophila species. They also exhibit an obligate biphasic intracellular life cycle within eukaryote host cells. Some of these new chlamydiae are currently considered potential emerging human and/or animal pathogens. Parachlamydia acantham...
متن کاملLawsonia intracellularis contains a gene encoding a functional rickettsia-like ATP/ADP translocase for host exploitation.
ATP/ADP translocases are a hallmark of obligate intracellular pathogens related to chlamydiae and rickettsiae. These proteins catalyze the highly specific exchange of bacterial ADP against host ATP and thus allow bacteria to exploit their hosts' energy pool, a process also referred to as energy parasitism. The genome sequence of the obligate intracellular pathogen Lawsonia intracellularis (Delt...
متن کاملChlamydiae as symbionts in eukaryotes.
Members of the phylum Chlamydiae are obligate intracellular bacteria that were discovered about a century ago. Although Chlamydiae are major pathogens of humans and animals, they were long recognized only as a phylogenetically well-separated, small group of closely related microorganisms. The diversity of chlamydiae, their host range, and their occurrence in the environment had been largely und...
متن کاملChlamydia and Chlamydophilia in small ruminants and other farm animals
Infection with Chlamydiae, specifically Chlamydophila (Cp.) abortus, causes enzootic abortion in small ruminants. The disease is highly prevalent in most parts of the world and has a high economic impact especially on the sheep industry. Swine is another species that can suffer from chlamydial infection. Besides Cp. abortus, Cp. pecorum and Chlamydia (C.) suis can all cause reproductive failure...
